Self Employment through English teaching and Makaton | Kat Skeavington

Kat Skeavington is a self-employed English Teacher and is currently studying a Masters course at the University of Birmingham which focuses on supporting children with Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties.

She offers English teaching services such as TEFL (Teaching English in a Foreign language) and gives support to children aged 5-10 through her SuperKat English scheme.

Recently, Kat successfully applied for funding through the B-Enterprising Start-Up Fund to support a new venture as a Makaton teacher.

Makaton is a unique programme language that uses symbols, signs and speech to help people communicate. It has similarities with British Sign Language and borrows some of the signs helping children (and adults) to communicate whilst developing speech.

Kat: The fund helped towards the Makaton Tutor training course. I am now qualified to teach Makaton freelance basis workshops. This will enable me to balance work, life and studies in (hopefully) a brilliant new way with a new niche.

I also received start-up mentoring through the Careers Network Alumni Leadership Mentoring Programme which was marvellous support (thank you!).

I’ve always been driven but after losing my income during COVID-19 this is giving me back the joy of teaching, but teaching on my terms and in a different way.

I am currently in the process of developing my website, advertising workshops and earning money as a tutor. My dream would be to get busy enough over the next 6-12 months and build my business up on a full time basis.

With thanks to Kat Skeavington
